Slip House is pleased to present On New Romanticism, organized in collaboration with Jessica Draper. Drawing on Max Hollein’s essay and exhibition Ideal Worlds: New Romanticism in Contemporary Art (2005) at the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt, this exhibition brings together a selection of artists who exemplify Hollein’s theoretical framework, in which he suggests: “we are experiencing the rampant artistic blossoming of a new romantic stance. A whole series of young artists are resolutely taking up the Romantic spirit, wanting to leave the quotidian well behind them. Instead they develop provocative poetic counter-worlds; devise a new relationship between the individual and nature; and take up the yearning for a paradisiacal, beautiful, and fairytale-like state; without however, forgetting the abysmal, the uncanny, and the mysterious that is always lurking behind such idylls.”
Just as Hollein focused on key proponents of the movement at that time who shared a commitment to a particular sensibility, this exhibition presents a group of artists engaged with a concept of two-sided beauty—one that captures elements of everyday experience alongside an imagined other world, both timeless and quotidian. Opening Tuesday 12th May, 2026, the exhibition includes new works by Sebastián Espejo (b. 1990); his largest work to date will be on view. Also featured are paintings by Andrew Cranston (b. 1969), alongside works by Oda Iselin Sønderland (b. 1996), Noorain Inam (b. 1998), and Maude Maris (b. 1980), as well as sculptures by Cate Pasquarelli (b. 1998) and Elizabeth Jaeger (b. 1988). The works share a playful approach to scale, contributing to a distorted, illusory sense of coexisting realities.
